2 Chronicles 19:6-7 “Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. 7 Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”
Being a Christian means that we do not make decisions based on our own principles–it means that we have sworn allegiance to uphold the righteousness of someone greater than ourselves. The difficult part of this is that as flawed and sinful people we often struggle with making decisions that cause even our families and friends to not appreciate our choices. Why? Because we are not affirming their behavior. Instead, we are standing against ALL bad behavior in the Lord’s eyes. Ironically, this often means that we willingly oppose ourselves because we are sinful and therefore we must be constantly willing to repent and admit guilt. A righteous and impartial judge does not fear people–they fear what is bigger than themselves. If you fear people you will always be driven by the urge to not rock the boat. The fact is that we like to kill the messenger, but people who take a stand for what God declares as righteous are not speaking from their own perspective–they are the voice of God Himself. When people reject the truth of God which comes from your lips they are not rejecting you–they are rejecting God. Though it may be hard to tolerate the negative feelings that people have towards you for declaring that they are standing against God’s righteous decrees, it is much more intolerable to stand against God Himself and have to answer for your rebellion on the ultimate day of judgment. Jesus promised us that we will be rejected just as He was, so take heart whenever you feel the pressure to not speak truth to someone–God is on your side!
